Ok, I am just being sarcastic in my post title. The 25km Penang Bridge International Marathon I took part in this morning wasn't fun at all. I seriously regretted doing it! Darn! I was so tired now, and my poor, poor legs are suffering right now. It's not fun at all.
First I have to wake up at 3am. Yes, bloody hour to start a run right? Then the organizer blocked the road so YM had to drop me a Krystal Point, and I walked all the way to Queensbay Mall to register. I realized that my stupid old Nike running shoes were a little worn on the sole when I walked there, so I prayed for it to remain inact until I finish the stupid run.
I was so sleepy and I couldn't find VY, who came with her other friends so I have to do the long journey alone. It was ok at first, the morning breeze was cool and my shoes are still ok despite a small opening on the left side. And all the way I jogged/walked towards the bridge.
Then I realized that my muscles were already quite tensed so I decided to slow down. More runners are zooming passed me. Hell, why is everyone looking so fit and healthy? And before I even reached the middle spam of the Penang Bridge, the left sole of my shoe fell off! What a donkey luck right? I was so pissed so I sat on the railing peeling off both sides of the soles.
At first I tried running bare foot, which turned out to be a stupiad idea, so I wore back my soleless shoes. It wasn't really comfortable but much better compared to shoe-less so I didn't complain, not as if I have anyone to complain to too.
My patience dried up soon and I was feeling rather down. Running alone is so not fun. My legs had surrendered by then, so I continued strolling. I felt like the bridge is a never-ending road. I never realize that the bridge was that long until today.
Following my initial plan, I should be hailing the sweeper bus once I crossed over the mainland. It was 7.16am when I reached there but the bus won't move until 9am, or so they said. I decided to continue the walk instead and almost immediately regretted my decision.
When I kept on walking, I can't really feel my legs anymore. They were like a pair of robotic legs that kept stepping one step by another but the piercing pain of my blister (caused by the soleless shoe) and an irritating ache on my thigh (caused by the endless walk) did not subside. I was cursing myself once everytime I took a step, for signing up myself for such a torture.
The sun was already up at that time, it was no longer breezy and nice. I felt sticky and smelly and the pain seemed to grew with every move I made. I took a few break at the bridge, letting my muscle rest a while before I continued to move. I was longing for the bus to come and save me but the ones that passed by were all filled with people.
Having no luck with the sweeper buses, I continued my torturous journey... alone. That was the worst part. I saw many groups of people resting, they were as tired and grumpy as I was, but at least they have people to share it with. Darn!
By then, the marathon has changed to walkathon, because everyone seemed to give up on jogging, they were either walking or resting. Suddenly, I saw a familiar face among the many walkers. A colleague! Hell, I don't even know her name but I don't hack care. I gave her one of my rare friendly smile (I am not a hypocrete, I am sincerely happy to see someone I know) and started walking with her. That gal was really very cheerful, despite the pain and tiredness, she kept humming happy tunes and talking nonsense. I really enjoyed her company.
Just then another familiar figure popped out of nowhere. VY!!!!! So happy! Oh, forgot to mention, it is her birthday today! I still don't understand why she decided to do a marathon on her 25th birthday, weirdo! Finally, I have a pal to chit chat with while continuing our walk.
We finally made it crossed the bridge. Several filled up sweeper buses passed us. I was a little frustrated, why are there not enough buses to cater for everyone? By everyone, I mean me! Haiz. We already gave up hope on buses, and decided to walk all the way back.
As we were near E-park (yeah, my future home), an ambulance stopped by and an officer asked me: One place, anyone? I felt like hopping into the ambulance immediately but no way I am going to leave my friend to walk alone. So I asked: Two can? He scanned the ambulance for a while and said: Fine. One front one behind. Without hesitating, we jumped into the ambulance and off we go!
I was already half-dead when I reached the finishing line. Went for a quick lunch once Queensbay is opened. I was so hungry but I don't feel like finishing the crumbed-pie like pancake I ordered. Luckily YM arrived and he ate up the half.
And now, I am lying on the bed, legs sprayed with antiache medicine, feeling so defeated and tired. Darn! Somemore have to work tomorrow! My left leg is aching badly but my right leg is ok, weird! But when I see EW, who also ran the 25km half marathon, I felt much better! That fella walked as if he is half-cacat. Muahaha, I am devilish!
Oh, conclusion, marathon is not fun. Will not do it again.
P.s: I have a wedding to attend next week, hopefully my legs were not aching anymore, if not, I really don't know how to walk in high heels. No way I am not wearing high heels to the dinner!
